Sport and performance socks

Zoned cushioning, mesh ventilation panels and arch support to specification.

One sock, several different fabrics.

A performance sock is not knitted uniformly. Cushioning goes where the foot lands, mesh goes where it sweats, and a firmer band goes around the arch. The machine changes structure several times within a single pair.

That zoning is the whole product. A sock described as "sport" with none of it is a crew sock in a different colourway, and the buyer will find that out on the first sample.

Who orders sport socks.

Buyers whose customer will notice the difference on the second hour, not the first.

Performance brands

Running, training and trail lines where the sock is specified alongside the shoe it is meant to be worn in.

Clubs and federations

Team supply with fixed colours and a knitted-in crest, reordered every season to the same standard.

Specialist retail

Running and outdoor shops selling socks as a considered purchase rather than a multipack.

What to settle before we quote a sport sock.

Every one of these adds or removes cost visibly, so decide them together rather than one at a time.

Which zones are cushioned. Heel only, heel and forefoot, or full sole. More cushioning is not better; it is warmer, thicker and changes the fit of the shoe.

Left and right specific, or not. An L/R sock supports the arch more accurately and doubles the packing complexity. It also means a lost sock cannot be replaced from the pack.

Ventilation. Mesh panels on the instep move moisture but are the first place a sock wears through. Their position matters more than their size.

Yarn behaviour when wet. Cotton holds moisture and softens; synthetic blends move it and hold shape. This is a performance decision, not a cost one, and it should be made before the colourway.
