What you are looking at.

The order above follows the order a sock is made in, from cone to carton.

The creel and the machines. Yarn comes off the cone wall and feeds the circular knitting machines, which knit a sock as a tube from cuff to toe. Cylinder diameter and needle count are set per construction, so the machine is configured for your order rather than your order being adapted to the machine.

Linking. The toe is closed after knitting. This is the step a wearer feels through a thin sock and the step that separates a good sock from a cheap one, which is why it is photographed close rather than in a wide shot.

Boarding. Socks are pulled onto heated foot-shaped forms, which sets the size and the shape. This is where a pair stops being a knitted tube and becomes the pair on the packaging.

Pairing, inspection and packing. Every pair is matched, checked and packed to the buyer's artwork. Production is measured back against the sample you approved, not against a written description of it.

The floor is open before you commit.

Photographs are a summary. Buyers are welcome to walk the workshop in Istanbul before placing a first order and at any point during production. Most questions that take three emails take four minutes standing next to the machine.
