Dress socks

Fine enough to vanish inside a leather shoe.

A dress sock is knitted at a fine gauge with a flat face and no pile. The result is thin, smooth and close to the foot, so it sits inside a formal shoe without changing its fit or breaking its line at the ankle.

Fine gauge is unforgiving. There is no pile to hide an uneven stitch and no bulk to disguise a badly linked toe, so the quality of the linking shows through the shoe in a way it never does on a thicker sock.

Mercerised or not. Mercerised cotton takes colour deeper and holds a subtle sheen that reads as formal. Standard combed cotton is matte and cheaper. The difference is obvious side by side and invisible in a written spec.

Toe linking. A hand-linked toe leaves no ridge against the toes. It is slower and more expensive, and in a thin sock inside a leather shoe it is the difference a wearer actually feels.

Rib or pattern. A plain flat face, a fine rib, or a jacquard motif. Pattern at fine gauge is where dress socks become interesting and where sampling time goes.

Reinforcement. Heel and toe can be reinforced with a stronger yarn. It extends the life of a thin sock considerably and slightly changes the colour at those points, which some buyers accept and some do not.
